Helpful Hints - Car Selling Online

Selling your car online is all about getting the best price and selling in the quickest possible time.

The internet is a great place to sell your car. With national classified sites such as Autotrader, Desperateseller and Findit as well as the omnipresent Ebay, there are numerous other sites that will list your car. Just as you would in buying a car, you are buying a service from any of these sites. There is no such thing as a free lunch and they will all cost you money, either upfront or after the sale. Therefore making the right choice car selling site can save you time, grief and money.

Where to sell your car?

  • Big Classified Sites – these are great depending on what you have to sell. However, if you have a popular car it is likely that hundreds more my be available at a similar price. Be savvy and think about how you describe and price the car. Think about how people search on these sites, look at the price breaks, is it better to be the 150th Ford Focus listed at £6000 to £6999 or one of the first at £7000?
  • Smaller Classified Sites – look at these sites from the perspective of the buyer. Do they have very few cars for sale? If so why? Does the site appeal to you? If they are asking for similar money to the larger sites then they are best avoided.
  • Owners Clubs – if you have a classic car; collector’s car; or a modified car then look at owners club sites (listed elsewhere on this site) as you will be targeting an audience that knows and understands your car.
  • Online Auction Sites – Often seen as a great place to buy a bargain! Now, if that used car “bargain” happens to be your car then take steps to ensure that it was a good deal for you as well. Research the market for a few days, you’ll need a seller account, if you aren’t already a seasoned ebay veteran. Have a look at what similar cars are going for, put them on a watch list and follow the bidding. Read and learn from the cars that sell high, as well as those that fail to sell or go for a low price. Be totally honest, use good quality pictures, set yourself a realistic and acceptable reserve price. Be prepared to have a flexible attitude to your eventual selling price.

Getting The Best Price

  • Presentation - Make sure the car is well presented and described. Your prospective car buyer will take a dim view of a car that is not what they expected and if they haven’t already walked away, will use this as a negotiating tool to reduce the price. A morning’s work with some car cleaning products or paying for a professional vehicle valet will make it harder for a buyer to knock your price and be well worth the effort.
  • Honesty – You wouldn’t, well I hope not anyway, buy a car without checking it’s history first. Do not expect any would be buyer of your car to do otherwise. If the car has a past that will affect it’s value then be honest. If it is an import then disclose this, as an HPI or other Data Check will reveal a lot.
  • ValuationValuing your car is important. Use the online valuation services available on this site or read a car price guide to get the right price for your car. Being realistic means that you can charge the price that your car is worth. This avoids a lot of embarrassing haggling and increases the chances of a quick sale. Nobody who has done their research will pay you more than the guides say and putting an overvalued car on an online car sales site is a waste of time.

This is just some basic advice, please read the guides online or from the newsagent. Make sure your used car is clean, tidy and as described – and GO FOR IT !!!!!!!
